What are the basic chapters required in physical and inorganic chemistry to do before starting IIT JEE organic chemistry?
First of all when you will talk to IIT JEE toppers, you come to know that they had given importance to every chapter. But iitian mentor can guide you properly on what should be the right strategy to follow, in which chapter you should give more effort. But if you start your preparation from the basics then it will help you more to understand different types of problems. Also you will find many correlated chapters. Basic concepts build a strong foundation. Study your 11th class properly to understand 12th. In your class 11th clear your basics on State of Matter, Equilibrium, redox reaction, chemical thermodynamics, Chemical bonding and molecular structure, Structure of atom, General organic chemistry, Hydrocarbons. These are the important chapters of physical and organic chemistry. Put effort into these chapters of class 12th : Solid state, solutions, electrochemistry, surface chemistry, chemical kinetics, Biomolecules, Chemistry in everyday life, Alcohol, Phenol and Ether, polymers, organic compounds containing Halogen, Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acid, Organic compound containing Nitrogen. Chemical bonding is a good base to start almost everything in chemistry. But it is not absolutely necessary.
Chemical bonding helps to understand which type of bond prevails between 2 atoms in molecule, whether bonding is ionic or covalent. Other high level concepts of chemical bonding , like other theories, are almost not important for organic chemistry.
You donot need much basics of any other concepts in previous chapters to start learning organic chemistry. Organic chemistry is itself a new topic in chemistry. The 2 chapters you study in class 11 is the basics , and is sufficient for your higher level studies in class 12 and so on.
So, As i said before, chapters like chemical bonding, atomic structure etc give some basics to understand organic chemistry. But even without these, you can absolutely manage organic chemistry.
Before starting IIT JEE organic chemistry, it is important to have a solid understanding of the basic concepts in physical and inorganic chemistry. The following chapters are considered essential:
Physical Chemistry:
- Thermodynamics: Laws of thermodynamics, entropy, free energy, and thermochemical equations
- Chemical kinetics: Rate laws, order of reaction, activation energy, and reaction mechanisms
- Equilibrium: Le Chatelier’s principle, acid-base equilibria, and complex ion equilibria
- Electrochemistry: Electrolytic and galvanic cells, Nernst equation, and conductivity of electrolytes
Inorganic Chemistry:
- Periodic table and periodic properties: Trends in reactivity, electronegativity, and ionization energy
- Chemical bonding: Ionic, covalent, and coordinate covalent bonds
- Coordination compounds: Isomerism, naming, and magnetic properties
- Main group elements and their compounds: Alkali and alkaline earth metals, halogens, and Noble gases
Having a strong foundation in these concepts will help you to better understand and apply the concepts in organic chemistry. Additionally, it is important to regularly review and practice the concepts in physical and inorganic chemistry to keep your understanding fresh and up-to-date.
